So Susan Flutter Mascara

So Susan is UK based brand and it is sold in Australia only through Violet Box (you can read more about Violet Box here). I received it in one of their monthly beauty boxes. The mascara is valued at $32 in VB online shop whereas So Susan US website sells it for USD 17.46. Can you believe the difference??? It is twice as expensive here in Oz!

So Susan Flutter mascara comes only in black shade and it is cruelty free, meaning no animal testing, it is also suitable for contact lens wearers. This is how they describe it:

“An intense carbon-black mascara formulated with hyaluronic spheres to help you achieve the darkest, curviest lashes possible. The long brush with extra stiff bristles helps to achieve voluminous, multi-dimensional lashes in just one coat.

No mineral oils, no phthalates, fragrance free, with hyaluronic spheres, hypoallergenic, non-comedogeni

I do like the packaging. Shiny and nice 🙂 The wand is towards traditional wand style (old school wand perhaps?) and stiff as its been described. It is short and not very wide. The formula is more wet than dry and the shade black truly is a carbon black which is the ONE and ONLY good thing about this mascara.

Before I start writing about all the things that I do not like about it I will show you the result and then you will understand what I mean. Here it is:

So Susan Flutter Mascara

Do you now understand what I mean? Who ever has been reading my reviews knows what I like and this is NOT what I like. First of all, it does not give any volume what so ever! Believe me, I know because this look has been achieved after three coats! Three coats!! The curl I had was gone as soon as I applied the product. There is no talk about voluminous, multi-dimensional lashes in just one coat as they advertise because it is not achievable even with three coats! The look it gave was as I would have tinted my lashes, thats it, nothing more. I would never ever pay $32 for it or USD 17.49! And I don’t care that it is cruelty free and free from all other stuff because it simply does not do what it says it is suppose to do.

This is one of the most falsley  advertised mascaras I have ever seen! The only positive things about it are the carbon black look and the fact that it didn’t smudge at all.

Guerlain is again one of the brands that I have never used so their Maxi Lash Mascara is my first Guerlain product. The mascara is rated 4.2 in MakeupAlley which is pretty good. I purchased it from for $39.50 whereas their sale price is $42 which actually is quite pricey. This time around I didn’t get as discount as I normally do and I assume I purchased only one product therefore less discount. It comes in shades of Black, Mocha and Violet.

“A charming trump card and an irresistible weapon of seduction… Maxi Lash dresses up, intensifies and enhances the eyes. Its extraordinary formula ensures breathtaking volume, curl and hold. Its secret? The combined action of three polymers: the first is coating, the second is softening and the third is setting. From the very first stroke, they act together for a simultaneous result in order to plump up and curl the fringe of lashes in a lasting and even way.

Coats are layered on lightly for tailor-made volume: immediate, stylised and long-lasting. Colour is intense: a deep black pigment enhances the lashes with captivating, shimmering and unrivalled colour. With its bevelled, facetted shape, the brush controls and sculpts curves to perfection.

Maxi lashes in the blink of an eye.”

I love the packaging! It is nice and golden and the tube is flat and tiny. Looks like a gold brick and me like it 😛 This is the packaging I expect from a high end makeup brand. The wand is good too and is not as clumsy as regular volumising mascara wands. It has just enough product on it and consistency is perfect, it is not too dry or too wet. I don’t think the black shade is as intense as Guerlain describes it.

Application was easy and smooth. I could see already with the first coat how much volume it gave and I loved it! The tip of the brush was small enough to access lashes in eye corners. It kept the curl fine and did not clump the lashes. This is the look:

I was extremely pleased with the way it looked. The downside of the mascara was that it smudged. Oh boy how it smudged! I this time even took a photo to show how it smudged because it was that bad. Have a look:

It started smudging so deem quickly. I think after couple of hours only! This photo was taken at night after several hours of wear and several under eye wipes (sorry about the yellowness of the photo, lighting in my house is not so good at nights). I didn’t noticed that it had gave me double circles until I went to wash it off and can you imagine, my husband came home from work and I was walking around the house like that and he didn’t say anything! Talk about looking good for your hubby 😛

Im so disappointed because I was so happy with the initial look. It gave lots of residue under my eyes after washing off so this is a mascara that needs makeup remover to get it completely off.

I will keep using it it but will apply only on my upper lashes because smudging under eyebrows was very minimal. I am not sure though if it was because of my eyeshadow or maybe my skin is less prone to smudging under eyebrow. Will test it without applying the eyeshadow and will see then how it looks.. Very good volumising mascara and very sad it smudges so much 😦
